Two different groups want to open charter schools in Knox County.

Knox County Schools says it received a letter of intent from Emerald Charter Schools, the non-profit group formed by the Emerald Youth Foundation. It announced earlier this year it plans to open a charter school for inner city youth. That school would start with Kindergarten and first grade and add two grades each year through 8th grade.

A second group also sent Knox County Schools a letter of intent. "Genesis Rock" wants to open "The Dream Academy of Knoxville." The academy would start with 6th and 7th grades and add a grade each year through 12th grade.

Right now, there are no charter schools in Knox County. Any charter school must be approved by the Board of Education.
