The Boy Scouts' Great Smoky Mountain Council honored one of Knoxville's native sons.

Chad Pennington played in the NFL for 11 seasons. Thursday evening, he was the guest of honor at the 27th annual Distinguished Citizen Dinner.

Past honorees have included governors, senators and the entire Manning family.

Pennington says he's honored to be recognized by the council, but says their good works should be celebrated as well.

"My dad always said the greatest gift you could give your child is yourself. And with the scouting organizations, being able to have adults that give their time, give themselves to our kids to let them know that we care about them, that we're here to help them in their walk through adolescence and to help instill those characteristics that they need to be successful-- it means everything," he said.

The Distinguished Citizen Dinner serves as a major fundraiser for the Great Smoky Mountain Council each year.
