Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Lowell Russell is back home in East Tennessee after undergoing spinal surgery in San Francisco.

Family and friends said Russell met with a doctor Wednesday morning. The doctor expects Russell to be sore for a while, but he says everything looked as good as it could considering his injuries.

Almost two years ago, the driver of a tractor trailer fell asleep at the wheel and hit Russell's cruiser on I-40. The crash nearly killed him.

During his most recent surgery, doctors pulled several screws and pins from his neck.

His doctor says Russell already has more movement in his neck than before the surgery, but they won't know the true success of the surgery for a couple months.
