The Emerald Youth Foundation is bringing its plans to start a public charter school to members of the community.
The group hosted a series of focus groups Tuesday to discuss the educational models for the Emerald Academy. The school would be the first charter school in East Tennessee if it's approved by the Knox County Board of Education.
Organizers hope the community meetings will help generate discussions and feedback about their plans.
"We hope to get some ideas and input on the design of the academy as well as the educational plan. We hope to get feedback and just reaction to what we've proposed," said Kevin DuBose, the Emerald Youth Foundation Community Development Director.
Emerald Academy would be open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. If the plans for the school are approved, administrators plan to open it in fall of 2015.
