Second Harvest Food Bank received a record breaking food donation on Thursday.
Smithfield Foods of Virginia and Food City donated 80,000 pounds of meat products to the food bank -- the largest amount of protein it's ever received at once.
As the world's largest pork provider, Smithfield started its Helping Hungry Homes program in 2009 when they saw the need due to the poor economy, and it hasn't found a reason to stop yet.
"The need is still there. You've got so many working families that just don't quite have enough to make it through the end of the month. A lot of times we think about the homeless person needing some help but sometimes it's your next door neighbor," said Dennis Pittman, director of corporate communications at Smithfield Foods.
The protein-packed donation will provide enough food for 320,000 meals in the area.
