As Knoxville continues to push people toward the downtown area, it's focusing on South Gay Street as its next overhaul project.

City leaders Tuesday discussed plans for the 700 block of Gay Street. They say it serves as the first greeting for visitors when they're coming from South Knoxville.

The city says that block has not seen any maintenance in 20 years. The plan would pour $800,000 into the block for tree planting and upgraded sidewalks.

The project should start one year from now.
