The animal shelter in Newport now has a new name.

The new Dr. Carol Hood Memorial Animal Shelter is named for a long-time veterinarian at the shelter. She was known for starting several programs at the shelter, including opening all the surgery rings and a low-cost spay and neuter program.

The shelter's current director says her work with RAM can't be replaced.

"She was this, she was everything. You know she came up with it, she coordinated it, she called every state looking for doctors and volunteers. Carol was RAM-- Carol was Rural Area Rescue," said Brandy Hensley, animal shelter director.

Carol Wood passed away earlier this year. She was 62 years old.
