Two East Tennessee civil servants earned national honors for their work to save a person trapped after a car accident.

Smokies park ranger Brad Griest and Townsend volunteer firefighter Christopher Scarbrough rescued a motorist who crashed into the Little River back in December 2011. Griest and Scarbrough jumped into 45 degree waters, pried open the door and pulled the person to safety.

For their bravery, Griest earned a Valor Award, while Scarbrough earned the Citizen's Award for Bravery.
