(WBIR - Greeneville) The town of Greeneville is on a mission to spruce up its downtown area and is offering a couple of programs aimed at doing just that.

One program is the Downtown Facade Grant Program. It's a partnership between the town and Heritage Community Bank in which an individual business can get up to $5,000 to improve its curb appeal.

City Administrator Todd Smith explained, "It's a 50/50 match. We will match up to $2,500 per side or $5,000 per project for each project."

The program has only been available for a few weeks and already three downtown Greeneville businesses have been awarded the money.

Greene County Farmers Mutual plans to use the money its been awarded to replace its old second floor windows with new, energy-efficient windows.

The iconic Capitol Theatre is planning to use its grant money to enhance its marquee so it can light up Main Street.

The third business to be awarded the Downtown Facade Grant is The Development Group, which owns downtown office space. Smith says The Development Group will improve the look of its wall with the grant money.

Smith says there's still grant money available. The program has been budgeted to last for the next 3 to 5 years.

Also, the Town of Greeneville is offering the Downtown Loan Program in which a downtown business can get up to $25,000 for property rehabilitation projects. Smith says the idea is for the Downtown Facade Grant and the Downtown Greeneville Loan programs to work hand-in-hand to improve the town's historic downtown area.

For more information on the programs and how to apply visit the Town of Greeneville's website.
