Members of a local Girl Scout troop spent the day Wednesday volunteering at Young-Williams Animal Center.

The girls did landscaping work outside the shelter. They laid new mulch and made the path through the memorial garden more accessible.

One of the girls wanted to volunteer at the shelter as part of her Silver Award project. Her friends in her troop came to help her out.

She says folks will see their hard work any time they go to the shelter.

"When people walk in here, they'll see how much this has changed and it really does look like a memorial," said Abby Frain.

The Silver Award is the second highest honor in Girl Scouts. Girls earn it through community service projects.

The girls also built new shelves to increase storage space at the center.
