A Union County fire department that took subscription fees this year won't get funding from the county.

In the past, all volunteer fire departments got $20,000 a year from the county. But Paulette Fire Department said this amount wasn't enough. This year, Paulette Fire Department started charging residents subscription fees for services, according to Chris Upton, Union County commissioner and Sharps Chapel fire chief.

Monday night, commissioners passed the county budget, which included withholding funding to fire departments that charge subscription fees. Paulette Fire Department is the only department that takes subscriptions in Union County. Upton said the other volunteer departments will still get their funding.
