(WBIR) Seven Islands became the 56th state park in Tennessee.

The newest addition to the parks system is near Kodak but is still in Knox County.

More than 160 different bird species live in that area, according to a Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation release.

The new park lies along the French Broad River and has a small boat launch for canoes and kayaks. The park also has hiking trails.

Before it became a state park, Seven Islands was a wildlife refuge managed by the Seven Island Foundation and Knox County Parks and Recreation.

Knox County transferred the 360-acre property to the state, and the Tennessee State Parks began managing the site on Tuesday, July 1.
