(WCYB) The family of a 4-year-old East Tennessee boy who has severe autism, is hoping a garage sale this weekend will help improve his life.

Our affiliate, WCYB, reports family members and the community held a garage sale to raise money for Carter Gillenwater. His mother said they're hoping to get a service dog for him.

She said Carter was diagnosed with severe autism at 3-years-old. Then, early this year he was diagnosed with epilepsy.

The Ruritan Club donated their building in Kingsport, Tennessee for two days for the sale.

As of Sunday afternoon, WCYB said the family raised $8,000. However, they need nearly $25,000 in order to get a service dog.

Carter's grandmother said they are hoping to raise enough money to get the dog in time for Christmas.
