Authorities have identified the pilot killed in a small plane crash Wednesday.

Don Edens, 44, of Rocky Top was piloting the Lancair 4 P that left Knoxville bound for Jackson, Mississippi. The plane crashed in Hamilton County, east of Chattanooga.

Edens was a project manager for Empire, a construction company based in Knoxville.

"This is a small company so this is a shock and a tragedy to all of us," said Owen Ragland, an administrator with Empire.

He had been with the company since 2005, and before that served in the Marine Corps. His biography said he was a commercially rated pilot.

Ragland said Edens was a great guy with the company and also a great husband and father to four kids.

"He's a man of real character and faith," said Ragland.

NTSB and the FAA are currently investigating to determine the cause of the crash.

Editor's note: The FAA originally identified the plane as a Cessna. The FAA corrected the error and said the plane was a Lancair.
