(WBIR) Knoxville Police Department welcomed 34 new police trainees Monday.

The recruits will undergo 26 weeks of training before they officially become officers.

The trainees spent the day at the police academy. They were greeted by several current officers along with chief David Rausche and Knoxville Major Madeline Rogero.

"The fact that they're four percent sitting of those who applied for this job speaks highly - that's a huge accomplishment," said Rausch.

Rausch said his department is down several officers and believes these new recruits will be a tremendous asset to KPD.
