(WBIR) Starting Monday, drivers should expect some delays as TDOT crews make repairs to sections of I-640 and its bridges.

Beginning on Monday, March 17 at 7 p.m., crews will reduce the I-640 eastbound and westbound bridges over I-275 from three lanes to two.

Crews will start bridge repairs on the ramp from I-640 westbound to I-40 westbound and the ramp from I-40 eastbound to I-640 eastbound. TDOT will reduce the ramps from two lanes to one.

TDOT has no specific date on when it will reopen the lanes, but in a release, a spokesperson said said crews will work around the clock to reopen the lanes as soon as possible.

Drivers expect a travel headache

Lisa Martin of Powell said, "It's bad enough trying to get around town now, there's construction everywhere."

But others, like Melva Anderson of Knoxville, are welcoming the project.

"It's been needing to be done for years," said Anderson.

TDOT is asking drivers to use extreme caution and to watch out for workers while while traveling through the construction zones.

"We want drivers to pay attention to the signs, especially the overhead message signs, as you're driving through town along I-640," said Kristin Qualls, District 18 Engineer for TDOT.

"Pay attention to any types of traffic cues and definitely lights at night time. We'll have officers who are with the work and staying with the cue," said Qualls.

Drivers can visit www.tn.gov/tdot to find updates on the project.
