Busted pipes, malfunctioning heaters, and stalled buses contribute to the closure of Knox County Schools on Wednesday
East Tennessee's unusually cold weather is extending winter break for Knox County Schools students at least one more day.
Students were supposed to return to class on Tuesday, but school was closed because of weather. Now, Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre has announced the school is also canceled on Wednesday.
A note to parents and staff said the system was "experiencing several weather-related issues in a number of our school buildings. This includes issues with water pipes and heating systems in several of our schools. Additionally, the abnormally low temperatures rendered about one-fourth of our school buses inoperable."
The letter goes on to say that holding school would "pose a potential safety risk to our students and staff."
School administrators, custodial, maintenance, security personnel and central office employees should report to work at the normal time.
Many other schools are also closed on Wednesday. You can see the whole list here.
