CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A preservation group has purchased a plot of land that includes two caves in Cumberland County.
The Southeastern Cave Conservancy has acquired the "Run to the Mill Cave" Preserve, a 75-acre plot of land in the southern part of the county. The organization will spend about $200,000 to acquire the land.
The Times Free Press reports the purchase will open a caving resource that had been off-limits to cavers and outdoor enthusiasts for several years.
Cave Conservancy treasurer Buddy Lane says the group has been working on the purchase for nearly 20 years.
The cave recently was discovered to host what biologists believe to be one of Tennessee's largest hibernating populations of endangered Indiana bats.
