Snow making is a standard at almost all resorts offering recreational skiing. That includes the Winter Olympics location in Sochi and Beech Mountain Resort in North Carolina.

Director of Skier Services, Gil Adams, has worked at the resort for decades and has seen the evolution of the technology.

Traditional snow guns combine cooled water and compressed air to blow droplets on to the slopes.

Airless snow guns use simple nozzles to atomize water into a fine mist. A powerful fan blows water droplets into the air then they fall to the slopes. That system does not require compressed air but only a power source.

Some snow makers feature cooling units to speed the freezing process when the air outside is too warm./
