A 16-year-old student is expected to make his first court appearance Friday at 10:30 am following a stabbing at South Greene High School Tuesday.

Greene County deputies charged the teen with attempted first-degree murder after officials said he stabbed another student Tuesday shortly before 8 am.

According to a release, the suspect allegedly stabbed a 15-year-old boy multiple times in the high school cafeteria. Crews flew the victim to an area hospital. As of last check, he was listed in stable condition.

A female student ended the fight by tackling the accused stabber, subduing him until the school security officer and teachers could handle the situation. Director of Schools Vikki Kirk said violence, even scuffles, very rarely happen within the 500 student community.

A 16-year-old student at South Greene High School is charged with attempted first-degree murder after officials say he stabbed another student Tuesday morning.

In a release, Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns said the teen stabbed a 15-year-old boy after a fight in the cafeteria just before 8:00 am.

The victim was stabbed multiple times. He was flown by helicopter to a local hospital where he is in stable condition.

The fight ended when a female student tackled the boy with the knife, subduing him until the school security officer and teachers could handle the situation. The female student who ended the altercation is a member of the school's wrestling team.

The suspect is in custody. He has a court appearance scheduled for Friday at 10:30 am.

Director of Schools Vikki Kirk says violence, even scuffles, very rarely happen within this small, 500 student community.

"But that just goes to show you, you never can predict when something is going to happen," said Kirk.

She says the system asked all of their counselors to spend the day at South Greene, to talk with students after the disturbing morning.

But she says parent's sending their students to school on Wednesday should feel confident they are safe.

"I think that our schools remain safe places," said Kirk.

Update: 12:30 pm

Officials said a male student stabbed the victim in the back before school started. The fight happened in the cafeteria and continued in to the hallway of the school. Dr. Kirk told 10News a female student tackled the suspect, stopping the fight. The suspect is in custody, and Greene County deputies are determining whether to press charges against the teen.

Officials have not released the names of the suspect or the victim.

The school security officer was supervising students coming off the bus when the incident occurred, but faculty and staff were able to get the altercation under control quickly. Dr. Kirk said she's very pleased with the school's quick response.

The school was placed on lockdown for 45 minutes, but students and faculty returned to their normal schedule by 8:30 am.

South Greene High School has about 500 students, and this type of incident is very uncommon among its students.

Additional counselors are at the school, helping students and faculty cope with what happened this morning.

(WBIR-Greeneville) Director of Greene County Schools Dr. Vicki Kirk confirmed the student victim is in stable condition after he was stabbed in the back at South Greene High School Tuesday morning.

(WBIR-Greeneville) A stabbing, involving two students, occurred in South Greene High School shortly before 8 am Tuesday.

Wings Air Rescue airlifted the male victim to an area hospital.

Director of Greene County Schools Dr. Vicki Kirk said a male student stabbed the victim in the back before school started. The fight happened in the cafeteria and continued in to the hallway of the school. Dr. Kirk told 10News a female student was able to overcome the suspect in a couple minutes after the fight broke out. The student suspect is now in custody. Officials have not released a name at this time.

Officials brought all the students in to the gym and placed the school on lockdown for about 45 minutes. The school returned to its normal schedule by 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Kirk said additional counselors are at the school help students and faculty cope with what happened this morning.

Greene County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, and deputies are currently on scene.
