The New Market Volunteer Fire Department welcomed nine new firefighters into its ranks Monday. The nine graduates replaced their yellow helmets with a black helmet to be formally sworn in.
It's the first in-house graduation from the new fire academy. They completed some of their training in Knoxville, completing more than 20 hours of live fire training in the city.
All members of the in-house academy are full-time volunteers, something the captain says the community should appreciate.
"The community should be very proud of this fire department, to have these guys here that don't make their time, because like I said, nobody gets paid, everybody's a volunteer; this is strictly a volunteer fire department," said Capt. Sammy Solomon.
The New Market fire department expects about nine more firefighters to graduate from their next class in a few months.
