An East Tennessee school system is turning the sunny weather into more money. Green County Schools have installed several solar panel systems, and say they're already seeing it pay off.
The 50-kilowatt system at Doak Elementary School saves about $800 to $1,000 of electricity a month. Spread out across the school system, that money adds up.
"With the solar program, we get about $9,000 a year. With our energy conservation program where we're just working to reduce consumption, we're about $650,000 since June 2012," said Steve Tipton, energy specialist.
Ten Greene County schools are in the top 200 for the national 'Green Building' competition to find the most energy efficient buildings.
