(WBIR - Jefferson County) Jefferson County is facing a $300,000 lawsuit following the death of three people who were serving time in the Jefferson County jail.

During a press conference Friday, Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig did not give the names of the three inmates recently found dead nor the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

"I contacted and requested that TBI assist our investigators to inspect what occurred and we have been found to have done nothing wrong. Two have taken their own lives and one has had what we believe to be a heart attack," he said.

The lawsuit was filed on April 16th by Donna Free, the widow of Jeffrey Free. Donna Free accuses jail officials of negligent care and supervision which she believes led to her husband hanging himself after reporting to the Jefferson County jail to serve a 45-day sentence.

The wrongful death suit states Jeffrey Free reported to jail on Saturday, January 11, 2014 to serve 45 days in jail for Driving Under the Influence 2nd offense in December 2013. According to the lawsuit, Free was found hanging by his neck after 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2014.

The lawsuit states Free suffered from a number of serious medical issues and jail officials were told by Free's sister that he was a suicide risk.

Donna Free also submitted letters from several healthcare professionals who said they cared for Free and described the medications he was prescribed for his medical and mental illnesses.
