An elderly Roane County man was found dead in his home Tuesday. Officials said he'd fallen through the floor and froze to death.
According to Chief Danny Wright of Rockwood Police, Ray Knight, 85, lived alone in his home on Elm Street. He was reclusive, and never wanted anyone to help him.
Someone checked on him on Sunday and Monday during the unusually cold weather, and he was fine. But on Tuesday, it was discovered that Knight was trapped up to his armpits in the floor, which was in bad shape. The coroner said he died of hypothermia.
Chief Wright said Knight was a former postmaster and commander of the American Legion. He stressed that Knight wasn't forgotten, that the community tried to help, but he just wanted to be left alone.
He said if anyone in in the city has a concern about a loved one, call dispatchers and they'd be happy to check on them.
