A missing witness has forced authorities to drop charges against a man wanted for a Roane County murder.

The Deputy District Attorney says they asked the court to dismiss the murder charges against Ralph O'Neal because they can't find one of their witnesses.

Authorities originally charged O'Neal with the 2007 murder of Ronnie "Boone" Cofer.

O'Neal will return to federal prison because he's already serving a life sentence on drug convictions.

The D.A.'s office can charge O'Neal again for the murder if they eventually find the witness.
