City leaders in Roane County have approved a plan to put a car dealership near a neighborhood that doesn't want it.

Kingston City Council voted five to one Tuesday night to approve a plan that will rezone land just off Interstate 40. That land will eventually hold a car dealership, and city leaders hope to put a big box retailer there.

Several local residents had complained that the dealership would be too close to their homes.

"The neighbors in those communities have not been totally anti-development, but they've been asking for some guarantees of a reasonable buffer to protect them from any big box that might be brought in," said Elaine Parker, Kingston resident. "So my point to the council was they're gonna blanketly approve the C4 zoning without asking for anything in return, no commitment."

The plan now heads to the planning commission for final approval.
