An East Tennessee church is still standing after a fire in its basement nearly destroyed the building.

Maryville boy scout troop, Troop 1804, was holding their weekly meeting at St. John United Methodist Church in Maryville when the fire started.

Just before their meeting, a scout heard a sound coming from downstairs. Assistant Scout Masters then checked it out before calling 911."He [a firefighter] said, 'if you had waited 10 minutes, and then called us, this would have been an inferno'," said Assistant Scout Master Chip Hatcher.

They discovered the fire had started in the church's newly renovated youth room downstairs.

The flames ultimately traveled up a wall, just inches before hitting the ceiling where they could have spread to the rest of the church.

No one was hurt in the incident. The Maryville Fire Department still has yet to release the cause of the fire. The church said it hopes to fix up the impacted room soon.

"Things like this happen," said Lori Stewart, the children's coordinator for St. John United Methodist Church.
