(WBIR) Blount County Schools has closed its bus service Friday because of budget cuts for the 2013-14 academic year.

The school system announced Tuesday that the county's 73 buses won't run Friday, but the school will be officially open.

Dates buses won't run:

  • Friday, Oct. 4
  • Wednesday, Dec. 18
  • Friday, March 14
  • Tuesday, May 2

Blount County Schools selected four days to cut because they precede county-wide holidays.

For a handful of parents, they've had to deal with having no bus service since the government shutdown Tuesday.

Since the Great Smoky Mountains are closed, along with a number of roads overseen by rangers, a some parents had to find another way to get their children to class. During the government shutdown, Bus #49 could not make its route.

The bus takes about two dozen students from the Top of the World community to three area schools: Heritage High, Heritage Middle, and Walland Elementary. Although there are other roads to access that community, the are too steep and curvy to drive the bus safely. Parents of those students now have to drop off and pick up their children at school until further notice.
