The Blount County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to the public about a man who impersonated an officer Tuesday morning.
A woman told investigators she was driving on Old Niles Ferry Road near Old Clover Hill Road around 7:40 am when a car began following her. She said it was a white vehicle with dark tinted windows, and the driver turned on a blue light on the dashboard.
She pulled over to the side of the road. The man came up to her vehicle, asked her a couple of questions, then went back to his car and drove off. She said he never identified himself or showed her a badge.
There were no traffic stops in that area reported to Blount County dispatchers during that time.
The woman described the man as having a medium build, brown/grey hair, wearing black clothing and a gray coat.
Sheriff James Lee Berrong said that all deputies will properly identify themselves when they make a traffic stop. He said if you are in doubt about the legitimacy of a traffic stop, you should call 911 and ask. It's also a good idea to drive to a safe location before pulling over.
If anyone has any contact with this man, they are asked to contact the sheriff's office immediately.
