(WBIR-Maryville) A man is in custody after a robbery in Maryville early Saturday morning.
It happened at Richy Kreme Donuts on East Broadway.
Employee Linda Barner said she was coming into the store around 3 a.m. with the money bag, when a man grabbed her from behind.
"I wrestled him over to the front window, thinking I would get the attention from the guys inside. I was screaming, 'Help me, help me, help me,'" Barner described.
Her granddaughter, Ashley Barner, came into work about five hours later.
"I thought she was just stressed because we had a lot of orders today. But she told me what happened and you could tell she wasn't the same," she said.
The robber took off with the bag, that held seven employees' cashed paychecks and money from the store. In total, Barner estimates he stole about $2,000.
"It's been very emotional. Of course, I had a lot of work to do so I just buried my emotions and got my work done," Barner said.
This is the second time a robbery has taken place at Richy Kreme Donuts in its 66 years. According to Barner, the first time was an attempted robbery.
"I'm really sad for the people who did it because they're the ones that need help and I've been praying for them all day. My heart bleeds for them," she said.
According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was taken into custody on drug charges by the Knoxville Police Department.
The name of the suspect is not being released pending the service of the arrest warrant for robbery on the man. He must face his charges in Knox County before being released to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
There is the potential that more individuals could be charged in the case, as well.
