The Blount County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam where the caller claims he's a police officer and asks for money.

In this scam, the caller says they are a law enforcement officer and uses the name of someone in the sheriff's department. They demand a credit card payment for late fines or court fees and says if you don't pay, you'll be arrested.

The sheriff's office says they do not collect fines and fees over the phone, and would never request personal information for money.

If a suspicious person calls you and says they are someone from the sheriff's office or demands personal information or money, call the Blount County Sheriff's Office at (865) 273-5000.
