The campus employs 151 people and could house as many as 300 by October

(WBIR) K12, an education technology company specializing in virtual schools, held a grand opening Wednesday night for its new family support center in Alcoa.

Currently the facility, located at the Tyson Centre Building, employees 151 people and could house as many as 300 by October 1. The company plans to invest $2.4 million into the center over the next five years.

While no actual students will be at the Alcoa campus, K12 Inc.'s president said employees will instead be helping families all across the country.

"Helping those families make a very important decision. Where do I send my child to school next year? And if my child wants an education that's different than the traditional brick and mortar education, is K12 right for them?" Tim Murray, K12 President and COO, said.

The Virgina-based company already has ties to East Tennessee. Its Tennessee Virtual Academy is operated through the Union County School District. It came under criticism in February 2013after a leaked email showed school leaders asked teachers to change the grades of failing students. 2011-2012 TCAP data showed TNVA students scored in the bottom 11% of the state.
