(WBIR) Most school districts in East Tennessee won't head back to class for a few more weeks, but Alcoa city schools will kick off another school year on Monday, July 21.
Alcoa is one of the first districts in the area to head back to school. Other districts will start in the coming weeks.
Classes at Alcoa Elementary School will start at about 7:50 a.m. Monday.
The reason Alcoa schools start earlier than other districts is because that school system uses a balanced calendar, which means the summer break is shorter, but students get longer breaks during the school year.
At Alcoa elementary schools, second and fourth graders will go back Monday and first and third graders will return Tuesday, according to the district's website. The rest of the district will start on Wednesday.
Alcoa Elementary School has about 750 students pre-kindergarten through fourth grade and about 75 staff members. As a whole, the district has about 1,700 to 1,800 students.
