Fire fighters spent several hours Monday morning trying to put a fire at a downtown Madisonville building. Around 12:20 Monday morning a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy drove by the what is called the WB Hunt Building in downtown and saw flames coming from a second story window.

Fire departments were called in from across the county and also Athens and Etowah. At one point a dozen fire trucks surrounded the building. Crews battled the blaze for nearly 4 hours before the were able to get the fire knocked down.

Fire fighters have shut down several streets while they remain on the scene looking for any hot spots. There is now word yet on what started the fire. It's believed that it started and was confined to the second floor.

The building had just recently been purchased and was undergoing extensive renovations.
