A McMinn County man is charged with attempted murder after trying to set his neighbor's house on fire.

According to Sheriff Joe Guy, firefighters and officers responded to a car on fire in a garage at a home on County Road 146 in Riceville around 3:00 am Friday morning. The fire was extinguished before spreading to the house. Two members of the Hixon family were home, and said they'd been having problems with a neighbor.

"The Hixon family have, over the past few months, experienced problems with a neighbor, Charles A. Jones, who has repeatedly harassed and stalked them," said Sheriff Guy. "Jones was arrested for the offenses a few weeks ago, and an order of protection against Jones was handed down from court. Of course, Jones was a suspect in this incident as well."

A few hours after the fire, Guy said Jones called 911 to file a complaint against the Hixon family. When deputy's responded to talk to him, he admitted to setting the fire.

" Mr. Jones told Lt. Eric Allman that he had lit some paper covered in dog manure and thrown it on the Hixon family's car," added Sheriff Guy. "His animosity towards his neighbors is unexplainable, it's simply disturbing. Nothing is much worse than a bad neighbor."

Jones, 50, was charged with twp counts of attempted first degree murder, aggravated stalking, violation of an order of protection, and aggravated arson.
