(WBIR-Monroe County) Two years ago Thursday, a fiery crash had completely shut down I-40 Westbound in Knoxville. At the same time a state trooper was on the brink of death after a truck driver fell asleep and crashed into the patrolman's cruiser on the side of the interstate.

"From what I understand, basically I was decapitated but my head didn't come off because my skull was dislocated from my spinal cord," said Sergeant Lowell Russell.

Sgt. Russell miraculously survived the crash on March 13th 2012 thanks to a daring rescue and an enormous amount of support from the community.

10News' Jim Matheny met up with Russell at his Monroe County home for an exclusive one-on-one discussion about his painful road to recovery during the last two years.

Thursday night at five and six, 10News will tell you about the setbacks, the success, and what's next as this loyal public servant keeps fighting to return to a normal life while still making a difference in his community.
