(WBIR - Monroe County) Madisonville could soon face a lawsuit by two environmental groups who said the town is violating the Clean Water Act.
The Tennessee Clean Water Network and The Watershed Association of the Tellico Reservoir issued a 60-day notice Monday to Madisonville, saying isn't doing all it should to keep its water clean for residents and the environment.
The two environmental groups cite Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) records dating back to August 2009. The lawsuit listed what they deem "chronic and egregious violations" like allowing millions of gallons of sewage overflows with chemicals and bacteria that could be hazardous. Those hazardous include discharges of nitrogen and phosphorus.
Madisonville operates a wastewater treatment plant and sewage system. Those facilities operate in a way that treated water flows back into Bat Creek, a tributary of the Tellico Reservoir of the Little Tennessee River.
