A north Knoxville school broke ground Monday on a $4 million dollar expansion.
Local officials celebrated the beginning of a project to add on to Shannondale Elementary School. The new addition will include 12 classrooms, a teacher's work area, a new library and media center, and additional cafeteria seating.
The expansion will add 21-thousand more square feet to the building. The school will also get a technology upgrade with interactive white boards.
"Whenever we talk about a facilities upgrade, a project with a building, we're always talking about making sure we provide a safe, healthy learning environment for our kids and that's what this is all about," said Superintendent Jim McIntyre.
The school currently uses some portable classrooms. Those will be taken out of use when the addition is complete.
