The driver of a car that tried to beat a train Friday morning in north Knoxville walked away from the collision.

According to Knoxville Police, officers were called to the train tracks on Buchanan Avenue near the intersection of McKinley Street at 7:19 am.

The engineer told investigators that the Mitsubishi Eclipse first slowed down at the train crossing, then at the last minute sped up to try to beat the train. The train hit the rear of the vehicle, spinning it around.

The driver, Ricky Frickes, 30, of Knoxville, was up and walking around after the crash. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

UPDATE: 8:17 a.m.

Officials said a driver only suffered minor injures after his car was clipped by a train in north Knoxville this morning.

The car crossed the tracks at N. Broadway and Buchanan Avenue shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Authorities told 10News the driver may have suffered a minor bump on the head from the accident.
