UPDATE 11:50 am:
Knoxville police confirmed the man shot several times by an officer Thursday night in north Knoxville died during surgery.
The sister of Clifford Crowe, 55, of Knoxville called 911 shortly after 9 p.m., reporting that her brother was threatening to kill himself and shoot anyone who came into the home.
Officials said Crowe was hiding under the bed and fired at officers when they enter the bedroom. Sgt. Bob Maxwell, 52, fired back, hitting the suspect several times. Crews took Crowe to UT Medical Center where he passed away during surgery.
Sgt. Maxwell, who has been with KPD since Jan. 1994, and Officer Derek Swartz, 30, have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard protocol.
KPD said neither Maxwell nor Swartz were injured during the shooting.
Tazewell Pike in north Knoxville was the scene of an officer-involved shooting Thursday night.
Police say a man threatened to kill himself before firing at police officers who were on the scene, and one returned fire.
They say the suspect was hit several times and rushed to UT Medical Center.
Two officers were taken to UT Medical Center to give blood samples, which is standard protocol. They will both be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
Neither officer was injured.
Names will be released once the families involved have been notified.
