Oak Ridge leaders are warning residents to be on the lookout for a utility scam.

Utility district officials say some customers have received a call from a person claiming to be from the district calling about missed payments. The caller threatens to cut off service if the customer doesn't pay them immediately.

The person then asks for a credit card number or bank account information. In some cases, an accomplice went to the customer's door to ask for the payment.

Utility officials say they send notifications by mail and don't call for payments. They emphasized that customers should never make a payment in response to a phone call they didn't initiate.
