A team of experts has come up with a cheaper alternative for the most expensive construction project in Tennessee.
The U.S. Department of Energy is set to build a new uranium processing facility at Y-12 in Oak Ridge.
Original estimates for the project called for up to $6.5 billion in funding, but changes to the design pushed the estimated cost of the project up to $10 billion.
Oak Ridge National Lab fielded a team of experts to come up with a different plan that would allow the DOE to move into a new building by 2025 and reduce costs to no more than $6.5 billion.
The team will give its recommendations to the National Nuclear Security Administration by April 15th.
Details aren't being released on the plans until the report is done and the NNSA weighs in.
