(WBIR) It's the time of year again when you'll start seeing firefighters with boots in hand asking you to drop in a few bucks for those struggling with Muscular Dystrophy. The "Fill the Boot" campaign is celebrating it's 60th anniversary.

The Oak Ridge Fire Department kicked off it's "Fill the Boot" campaign Saturday at the Oak Ridge "Secret City Festival" at Bissell Park. The firefighters set up a table with a couple of boots on top of it and encouraged festival-goers to drop in some cash.

Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said, "We see these children every day in their homes as we respond and provide assistance to them and so it means a little extra to our firefighters to be able to give back to these children."

Firefighter Duane Chase said, "It makes me smile. Anything that I can do to help out it just makes me feel good."

The "Fill the Boot" campaign kicked off in the mid 1950s.

The local Muscular Dystrophy Association Executive Director Erick Hendrick explained, "The campaign started in 1954 with just one family that went out and filled the boot for someone that he knew and it's grown into the largest partnership that the MDA has in the entire country and it's helped numerous families across the nation."

The money raised from the 'Fill The Boot' campaign goes toward providing services for people dealing with muscle diseases.

Some of the money is even used to send young East Tennessee children to a summer camp that not only teaches them independence, but also provides the kids with confidence.
