Officials arrested and charged a man who nearly crashed a car into a building in Oak Ridge early Tuesday morning.

Oak Ridge police said when Smith resisted arrest, a struggle broke out between him and the officer. At one point, Smith and the officer both fell into the driver's seat of the car. Smith then put the car in drive and accelerated towards the Rocky Top Convenience Store at 1190 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The officer managed to turn the wheel and steer it away from the building. The car then crashed into a steel post in the parking lot. After the crash, officers said Smith and the 17-year-old ran away.

Later that morning, Knox County deputies and Oak Ridge Police arrested Smith at west Knoxville apartment off W. Vista Way. Officials charged Smith on two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a schedule VI controlled substances for resale, reckless endangerment, evading arrest, among other charges.

Officials don't expect to file any charges against the 17-year-old girl, according to an Oak Ridge Police Department press release.

(WBIR) Oak Ridge police said two people are on the run after their car nearly crashed into a building early Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to the Rocky Top Convenience Store at 1190 Oak Ridge Turnpike to investigate a suspicious black sedan in the parking lot at about 1:40 a.m. Inside the car, police found Sherrius Smith, 20, and a 17-year-old girl. The two were reportedly intoxicated and fighting as they left the store, according to an Oak Ridge Police Department press release.

Authorities are still searching for the two people. Officials said multiple charges are pending against Smith.
