(WBIR-Lafollette) After nearly 40 years of working at one school, the band director at Campbell County High School is taking a well-deserved retirement.

"I think I'm the last remaining staff member or teacher here at Campbell County High School," Don Hendricks said before his last spring concert Saturday.

Since 1975, Hendricks has been teaching the thousands of students how to play and perform for football games, concerts, and local parades. At his 'swan song' Saturday, several students from the past came back to say 'thanks.'

"Everybody loved him," said Jessica Gross.

"Mr Hendricks was great and had a lot of patience. A lot of patience," Miranda Heath added.

Those same students played a special, surprise song for Hendricks' good bye. He will not leave the program altogether, as Hendricks will still play a supporting role in the band.

"Just enjoyed it. The kids are great- especially my kids here have been fantastic. The administration has been really good to me... it's been a great place," Hendricks said.

Also on Saturday, the Campbell County mayor proclaimed that the day be called "Don Hendricks Day."
