(WBIR) The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance said the large fireworks store that burned down last weekend was operating illegally.
Flames engulfed the Fireworks Superstore in Campbell County Sunday afternoon, shooting fireworks into the air that sparked other fires in the surrounding area.
At the time of the blaze, the store was operating without a license, according to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.
The state said the store received a cease and desist letter in March after the owners didn't renew their license last December. The spokesperson said the store resubmitted a license renewal in May, but the state hadn't granted it yet.
The store has been at that Campbell County location since 2008, but the family has been in the fireworks business since the 1940s. There's still no official word on what started the fire. State fire officials are investigating.
