After a more than two hour search, crews in Jefferson County have pulled a body from Douglas Lake.
(WBIR) The Sevier County Sheriff's Department has identified the man who drowned Wednesday while swimming in Douglas Lake.
Investigators say Elijah James Dixon, 20, of Sevierville, was swimming with friends in a cove of Dyke Road. His friends told deputies that they were trying to swim across the cove when Dixon apparently became exhausted and went under. His friends tried to help him, but were too late.
After searching for more than two hours, Dixon's body was found by a rescue diver in 48 feet of water, in the area where his friends said he went under.
After a more than two hour search, crews in Sevier County pulled a body from Douglas Lake Wednesday afternoon.
Dispatchers received the first call for help from the Dike Road area around 1:45pm. Callers told authorities their 20-year-old friend went under the water and never resurfaced. The group was apparently trying to swim across a 100 foot cove when the 20-year-old began to struggle.
On-scene crews told 10News searchers pulled a body from the water around 4:15.
Members of Sevier County Rescue Squad, Sevier County Sheriff's Office, Knox County Rescue Squad and the Sevierville Fire Department were all called to the scene.
A funeral home accepted the body. Family members will decide whether an autopsy is needed.
