(WBIR) A robbery suspect's attempt to hide from law enforcement didn't last too long as authorities found the man hiding in a storage bin in the basement of his home.

The Sevier County Sheriff's Office said 41-year-old Jack C McCrea was charged with one count of robbery and two counts of violation of probation after authorities said he robbed a local store.

Authorities said a man on Tuesday night stole money out of the cash register at the Dollar General Store on Boyd's Creek Road. The man approached the cashier and once she opened the cash drawer, he reached across the counter and grabbed a handful of cash.

Officials said a scuffle broke out between the suspect and a patron. As the subject ran outside, another customer chased him and broke out his driver-side window.

The suspect fled the scene, but authorities said witnesses were able to obtain the tag number of the vehicle.

The Sevier County Sheriff said the witness information led officers to a home on Winding Ridge Road, where they found McCrea hiding in a storage bin in his basement.

Authorities are also investigating a similar failed robbery attempt at the Zoomer's Market, which happened minutes before the Dollar General Store theft.

Sevier County Sheriff said additional charges are pending the conclusion of that investigation.
