Sevierville police are looking for a man who may have planned to steal from or kidnap a young girl at a local craft fair on Saturday.

The 11-year-old girl was visiting the Great Smokies Craft Fair on West Dumplin Valley Road when a man approached her at the snack bar and accused her of stealing. The man said he was a security guard and told her to follow him outside so he could check inside her purse.

The girl followed the man into the parking lot, where she said he tried to grab her hand and attempted to get her purse. She managed to get away and ran back into the building to her mother.

Surveillance video was found that showed the victim following the suspect, but the video quality made it difficult to get a good luck at the man.

He was described as a white male, 35-45-years old, bald, approximately 5'8" tall and weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing a white t-shirt, camouflage shorts and sandals.

Anyone with information is asked to call SPD Detective Lieutenant Sam Hinson at 865-868-1751.

Sevierville Police said everyone should be wary of people who claim to be security or a police officer if they are not in uniform. You should ask for identification, and young people particularly should not leave with someone claiming to be an officer without first going to a parent or guardian.
