Parents and teachers learn more about Common Core standards.
Thursday night, the South-Doyle Middle School PTSA hosted a meeting for parents and teachers to learn more about Common Core standards.
South-Doyle Middle's principal Beth Blevins explained what Common Core standards are and went through a Power Point presentation to assist parents in helping their children at home.
Blevins said Common Core standards will help students prepare for college and their futures.
"I've spent over two decades in education and I'm excited that this for the first time has the possibility of really getting our kids to grapple with and think deeply about those skills that they're going to need, not just for school but in life beyond school," she said.
Common Core standards were developed by states to establish a single set of educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English, language arts and math. These standards will be implemented for the 2014-15 school year.
